Jesus never intended that we weep and mourn and feel his death so intensely that we ignore the necessary deaths in our own lives.
He never meant for us to cast all of our spirituality on him, but to embody the path of egoic self emptying, love and presence that he did. A love so intensely present (and ironically uncontrolling) that nothing can stop it. Not even death.
He pulled people away from religiosity and into relationship and powerful communion with the merciful and compassionate nature of Creator. He drew friends and followers into relationship with the suffering, the birds, the flowers, and the love of God as opposed to the "rules of God." With those who set down their busy-ness and their fear he could reach them to say "stop seeking a hero and be the presence of God." When he became that it changed everything around him so much that we're still fighting over his source of power and intent today. We want him to be another pillar of strength for us so we don't have to be presence. We have turned him into an idol and stripped him of his humanity.
To be more like him we have to move from the external to the internal. Move there. Cultivate there. Overcome the egoic powers a little at a time. But few of us would ever leave behind all the trappings of this world to really accomplish this in one life. He did it in one life.
This process is co-created with, as Jesus called them in Aramaic, "Abwoon." (Look up the meaning and enjoy.) A lot of people say "God." We all see God differently. Some have overly externalized them and some have overly hoarded their inward focus without seeing God in others and the world around.
We can move toward this love to whatever degree we are willing and inspired. Jesus didn't want to be the pinnacle. He wanted us to do even "greater" things.
We don't need to reject our ordinary lives to be intensely present. But it helps to pull away and regroup from time to time.
Let Jesus be Jesus. Let "Christ," or the fullness of the Presence he embodied, live in you and everything you see. We won't get this as an audience member to his story. We will get this by letting him inspire us to live with loving abandon in our own.
